Telangiectasia is a condition in which widened tiny blood vessels cause threadlike red lines or patterns on the skin. These threadlike patterns form gradually in clusters. They are sometimes known as “spider veins” because of their fine and weblike appearance. Telangiectasia can appear anywhere on the body; however, they are common on the face (nose, cheeks, chin, lips).
The cause of telangiectasia is currently unknown. Current research suggests that causes may be genetic, environmental, or a combination of both. Most cases of telangiectasis appear to be caused by chronic sun exposure or extreme temperatures. Other possible causes include:
pregnancy
ageing
habitual corticosteroid use
scleroderma
dermatomyositis
systemic lupus erythematosus
